Delayed menstruation
Late or missed periods
A late period deserves a closer look. Review your cycle, recent changes and symptoms before deciding on an individual care plan.
When people come in
- Your cycle is longer than usual
- Periods have stopped for several months
- Changes following weight loss, exercise or stress
The Chinese medicine view
In Chinese medicine a regular cycle depends on sufficient Kidney Qi, ample Blood and a free flow through the Chong and Ren vessels. A shortfall or blockage in any of these may lengthen the cycle.
Common patterns
Kidney deficiency
Aching lower back or knees, scanty flow, tiredness
Blood deficiency
Pale complexion, dizziness, light pale flow
Cold congealing
Cold cramping eased by warmth, darker flow
Qi stagnation
Premenstrual distension, low or tense mood
Phlegm-damp
Heaviness, poor appetite, more discharge
Patterns are identified by a practitioner through all four examinations. They are here to explain the thinking, not for self-diagnosis.
The medical view
A missed period has several possible explanations. Pregnancy, contraception, hormonal conditions, weight changes and other health issues may affect timing. If pregnancy is possible, take a pregnancy test. Arrange a medical assessment if you miss three periods in a row or the problem keeps returning.
Possible pregnancy with severe or one-sided pain, dizziness, shoulder pain or heavy bleeding needs urgent medical assessment.
What the consultation covers
Elizabeth reviews your usual pattern, flow, sleep, diet, exercise and medication alongside a TCM assessment. Acupuncture, herbs or lifestyle changes are considered individually, with pregnancy status and medical findings in mind.
Therapies that may be discussed: Herbal medicine, Moxibustion
What to bring
- Dates of recent periods
- Pregnancy test results, contraception and medication
- Hormone tests or ultrasound reports, if available
Questions
Does every late period need treatment?
An occasional variation may not require treatment. Compare it with your usual pattern, rule out pregnancy where relevant and seek assessment for persistent changes.
Can I take herbs to bring on a period?
Avoid self-prescribing herbs to induce bleeding before pregnancy and the underlying cause have been assessed.
